County: Jackson
USGS Quad: Cottageville
Coordinates: 38.7552ºN  -81.7787ºW   Map
Maintained by: Trustees of the cemetery - contact is Genevieve Carney
Land owner: Trustees of the cemetery
Date added to WVCPA register: April 2007
Condition of cemetery**: Excellent (February 2007)
Accessibility: The cemetery is located on Foster Ridge, southwest of Ripley on County Road 32. While the Foster Ridge road is accessible from either the Rockcastle end or the Parchment Valley end of the ridge, the roadway is far more passable from the Parchment Valley end (closer to Ripley). Take the side road to the right (when traveling from Ripley through Parchment Valley) through the Sayre farm located directly below Mt. Moriah Chapel. Foster Ridge road goes up onto the ridge to the left shortly after you cross the bridge at the Sayre farm. The road condition right at that turn-off can look bad at times, particularly after a heavy rain, but there are a number of folks that live up on the ridge, and this end of the road is really in pretty good shape much of the year. At the cemetery itself, there is good room to park and turn around, and the cemetery itself is well-cared for and easy to walk through.

** Condition of cemetery as observed on the given date -
may not be representative of care at other times of the year
Scale: Excellent - Good - Fair - Poor - Abandoned

Comments:

Foster Chapel and Cemetery, Jackson Co., West Virginia

This cemetery is located adjacent to the now abandoned Foster Chapel. The cinderblock church building from the 1960's is still standing, northeast of the location of the original wood church building.  In 1977 the church building and cemetery, being abandoned by the United Methodist Conference due to lack of attendance, were entrusted to three trustees; Oris Lathey, Adrien Parsons and Dorn Grady. We are uncertain as to exactly who is currently maintaining the cemetery in such good stand, though we suspect it is still these three gentlemen and/or their families.
