In an email to WVCPA  from Bill Daugherty:

"This little marker was placed on John William Greer’s grave by the DAR to certify that his is a bona fide revolutionary war veteran. The Greer Cemetery was named for John William Greer.  The DAR emblem and a new stone were provided and installed by the DAR to replace the unintelligible old pieces of stone.
John William Greer’s son, John Thomas Greer Sr. was commonly called “Major Jack” after he was appointed a Major in the Virginia militia about 1840.
John William and John Thomas are my GGGrandfather and GGrandfather respectively"

In a February 2012 email to WVCPA from Greer family researcher Lora Yank,  the following explanation for the discrepancies in the inscriptions for Jane and John Greer is provided, along with additional Greer family information of note for this cemetery:

"I am the great granddaughter of Hiram Ellsworth Greer and a Greer family genealogist.  My direct line grandfathers lie in Greer Cemetery from H.E., known as "Ellie," to his great grandfather Rev. War Patriot John Greer - my 4great grandfather.

Rev War Patriot John Greer's wife was JANE Callaghan - the first name can be verified through Census records as well as Bath County VA marriage records.  We are not certain how the mistake was made on her headstone however; this is not the only mistake on their headstones.  On John Greer's, the date of death is shown as 1846 however circuit court records show that John died intestate in 1838.  This mistake can be explained.  One of the old hand cut stones that were there before the DAR stones, said "J.G. 1846"; no one considered that Jane's initials were JG too.  As a member of the DAR, I have been meaning to see if there is some way to have the inscriptions corrected.  As to John's name, I have researched him for many, many years and have never found any reference to his middle name being William; in fact, I never found even an initial to indicate any middle name.  Some members of the family believe its William based on his first son being named William.  In addition, Major John (sometimes called Jack) Greer is sometimes given the middle name of Thomas, and again the same situation as Patriot John, I cannot find any sources to confirm that.  Major John was a drummer boy in the war of 1812.  His drumsticks are still in the family.  Major John's son is John Thomas.

John Thomas and Oscar Newton his brother, married sisters.

The Greer listed as D., is DIMMA, daughter of John Thomas and Adaline Greer, born 23 Jun 1872 and died 18 Apr 1873.

Sarah Margaret (Greer) Shields is the daughter of Samuel Greer and Nancy Jones

Ora E. (Greer) Lewis is the daughter of John Thomas Greer and Adaline McDermitt

John Guy Lewis (Son of JC & Ora) is a WWI veteran

Essie Greer Moore is also a daughter of John Thomas & Adaline

The Homer listed as Homer Howard is actually Homer Hugh, son of George William and Mary Florence Larue Greer

Leroy, John Hugh, James F., Bonnie Boone Daugherty, and Elnora Adaline (Addie) Dunlap are all children of Roy Daugherty & Naomi (Oma) R Greer

Kate Edwards - I do not know of a Kate Edwards being buried in Greer, actually I do not know of a Kate Edwards at all.  Most of the Edwards family that remained in Mason County are buried in the Lutton Cemetery.  My great grandmother, wife of Hiram Ellsworth was an Edwards.  I believe who is being called KATE is actually my gg grandmother, Margaret Jane Gibbs Edwards who died 12 Sept. 1907 and is definitely buried in the Lutton Cemetery beside her husband Vinson.

The unidentifiable markers listed as Homer 1920 and Juanita I. 1925 are the infant children of Carl Wirt Greer & Minta Carr Greer Greenlee

Image 93 - I believe to be Carl Wirt Greer's footstone.

Image 94, 98, & 100 - I believe are also footstones - many of the graves used to have footstones

Image 101 & 102 - These are believed to be very old Moody family stones. The stone in Image 102 used to be more visible and said MOODY but nothing else could be made out.

We are VERY fortunate to have such a wonderful, historic, well-kept cemetery! I wish everyone were so fortunate. A great deal of care, love and hard work on the part of Steve Durbin and John Daugherty, our trustees, keep it looking lovely.  My sister and I along with a couple of other family members have had about six of the headstones repaired in the past few years.  Most recently, the headstone of Civil War soldier Ultimus Young.  There are still more to be repaired and we continue to work towards that goal!

Again, thank you so much for the wonderful work you do.  It is a blessing to us all!

Lora"
