County: Mason
USGS Quad: Elmwood
Coordinates: approx. 38.7382ºN  -81.8262ºW
Maintained by: Shinn/Stone family
Land owner: Shinn Family (Stone family descendants)
Date added to WVCPA register: October 2004
Condition of cemetery**: Excellent (October 2004)
Accessibility: This cemetery is located across the field at the top of the hill across from the Shinn home on the old Stone Family homestead. To get to the cemetery, take the road from Deerlick that follows Thirteenmile Creek upstream in the direction of the old Rockcastle Church (if you get to the church, you've gone too far!). After barely 2 miles in from the bridge at Deerlick, after you cross Spruce Run, a driveway goes up along the hillside on the east side of the creek.  It's a very steep, and in 2004 wooded, drive, though regularly used by Buck Shinn's family. At the top of the hill are 2 houses, and the cemetery is easily visible across the field on the south side of the drive.  In fairly dry weather, you can drive across the field (with permission, of course), and there is plenty of room to park and turn around alongside the fence around the cemetery. The cemetery itself is fairly level, well-trimmed lawn, so no problem to navigate even if you have some mobility difficulties.

Comments:

Dates in Red are not inscribed on the tombstone and have either been calculated based on death date or are as a result of research on the individual.

After having visited hundreds of cemeteries over the years, you start to acquire a number of "favorites" that you particularly like.  For us, this is one of those cemeteries.  Perhaps it was the wonderful company we had in Hope & Cecil Absten (Hope is a Stone descendant), perhaps it was the beautiful October weather we had for that Sunday afternoon drive, the beauty of the sunshine filtering through the tall trees alongside the cemetery onto the lush green grass - probably a combination of it all.  It just seemed to be the perfect place to have a picnic on a blanket and just sit back and listen to the birds and the wind in the leaves.
