Warner Chapel Cemetery:

The third Church formed in Union District was the United Brethren Church in 1833, later to be known as Warner Chapel Church.  Warner Chapel is located at Tribble, WV, down Tribble Road along the Mud Lick Fork of Thirteenmile Creek, a tributary of the Kanawha River.  The chapel is named in memory of Boudridge Warner, who in the 1830s donated the land where the chapel and cemetery now stand.  Originally, the chapel housed the United Brethren (Methodist) congregation, and in the early 1990's was home to an independent Baptist congregation, and still bearing the Warner name (per April 2005 the congregation was no longer meeting on a regular basis).

Current topographical maps incorrectly label the church as "Mt. Prospect Church", although it is possible that at one time in it's long life it was named that.  To see a topographical map of the Mud Lick Fork region, with the location of Warner Chapel identified (marked "Mt. Prospect Ch.", as noted before), CLICK HERE.

To make donations to the Warner Cemetery Fund (for the ongoing care of the cemetery), contact: Warner Cemetery Fund, c/o Mrs. Linda Smith, (304) 458-1713.

If you are conducting family tree research on any family members interred at Warner Chapel, contact us!  Joel is a direct descendant of Reuben and George W. Harrison, both buried at the chapel, and we're actively researching the Harrison family and many of the other families that are buried at Warner Chapel.  Our email address is linked to the contribution credit below the photo of the cemetery above.

APRIL 2015 UPDATE: Sad news - on April 8, 2015, Warner Chapel burned to the ground. While the exact cause of the fire is still unknown for sure, there was a severe thunderstorm that passed through the area around the same time as when the fire would have started. The Leon Fire Department responded to the fire, but unfortunately, the church was fully consumed by the time they arrived. As can be seen in the photos below, thankfully there was only minor damage done to the cemetery fence where the back wall of the church fell on it.

Key to Tombstone Listing:

(Click on the numbered links to download the tombstone photograph.  Black underlining indicates that the information is uncertain. Background notes are shown in red text and marked with a footnote reference as to their source.  In some cases, the full date of birth and/or death is given, based on source information, rather than the sometimes abbreviated text that appears on the stone itself.  Where necessary due to the ongoing disintegration of the inscriptions, the inscription is recorded here as it was read in the late 1960s and recorded in the "Mason County, W.Va. Cemetery Inscriptions" book.  The numbers alongside each individual or couple correspond to a plot diagram drawn by the author of this page, which can be viewed by clicking here.  If you would like to see an alphabetical listing by surname for this cemetery, click here.)

Presumed buried at Warner Chapel per 1969 reading by Juanita Burdette, as copied by Mrs. Charles Cottrill of Point Pleasant, WV; from oral history passed down through the generations to family historians, though no verifiable evidence of this in the possession of D. & J. Duprey; or through Death records in the possession of the Mason County Clerk's office in Point Pleasant, WV (so indicated on specific entry):

Carney, Thomas W.,  Feb. 18, 1880, 1 yr. 6 mo. son of Thomas and Levina Carney

Davis, Frank A.T., July 2, 1880, 2 yrs, 2 mo., son of Elias & Jemima Davis

Harrison, John, died abt. 1835 (died of cholera - some earlier publications erroneously give his death year as 1832, but he is mentioned in a deed in 1835 as living and also had a daughter born in 1835, so his death likely occurred late that year or during a subsequent year.  It is also possible that he was buried in nearby (destroyed) Elmwood Cemetery with his parents, though this has not been proven beyond a shadow of doubt)
