Dates
in Red are not inscribed on the tombstone
and have either been calculated based on death date or are as a result of
research on the individual.
Use
of the readings of this cemetery graciously granted by Bill Wintz of the Upper
Vandalia Historical Society. The names and dates of the tombstone
inscriptions, where they were illegible at the 2004 reading by Terry
McCallister, are taken from work done by Paul & Ruth Ellis on September
16, 1986. Terry is the contributor of the photos for this page.
Comments
from Terry:
"There is a row of eight
concrete markers, painted white, all in a single row, with no inscriptions on
them. Down over the hill where you can't see in the picture is one grave with
no headstone. Well that is the grave of the man that made the
others and before he could put the names on the others and also
make his self one before he died."
And
regarding the cemetery name(s):
"...when my Aunt Dorothy (Dorothy Terry) was buried there
it was called the Gibson Cemetery, but a year later when my
Grandmother (Ida Lee Terry) was buried there they called it the
Maddox. Looks like it is known by both names." |

Note
that there
are also a number of graves marked only with a stone; some with no stone at
all.
If
you have any questions about this cemetery, its care and maintenance
or current conditions, please contact WVCPA and we will forward your
emails to Terry McCallister and his sister Carol Sanford who presently
maintain this cemetery, following in the footsteps of their parents
before them.
