Land owner: Unknown
Date added to WVCPA register: April 2005
Condition of cemetery**: Good (March 2005)
Accessibility:

Located on Greer Road on the original Greer Family farm.

(Directions provided by WVCPA contributor Veva Scott):
"When heading southeast on Greer Road, Greer Cemetery will be on your left.
You will have to either make a sharp left turn (almost a U-turn) into the cemetery or go up the road a piece to find a suitable place to turn around. (The latter I recommend) The driveway is fairly steep and slightly muddy for those of us that are used to driving in flat areas such as Florida. Be careful exiting the property. It is on a bend in the road and you may meet a oncoming vehicle. I made it in a Saturn L300 wagon.
The cemetery was in above average condition. It was obviously maintained. The perimeter was fenced.  I found it easy to get around.  My aunt was with me and she seemed to do well with a walking stick.  I want to say, if someone was in a wheel chair, they shouldn’t have a problem. But keep in mind that there are some unexpected holes and know that some of the plots have indentations where the earth has settled.
One thing I thought was interesting. There was an outhouse on the property.  I don’t know if that was new or temporary."

** Condition of cemetery as observed on the given date -
may not be representative of care at other times of the year
Scale: Excellent - Good - Fair - Poor - Abandoned

Unidentifiable Markers:
Image 93 {3 markers} 1-CWG

These three markers are at the base of a tree located about half way back on the right side. Identified as Greer family footstones, one of them identified as Carl Wirt Greer's footstone.

{4 markers}

Group of four stones. On two of the stones there were only a couple of letters you could make out. It almost looks like the information fell off of the marker. Or maybe chipped away. Photo 102 is the closest stone. If you zoom in, you can see only a few letters. Believed to be old Moody family stones, Image 102 reportedly once had "Moody" clearly inscribed

Comments:

Dates in Red are not inscribed on the tombstone and have either been calculated based on death date or are as a result of research on the individual.

WVCPA thanks the contribution of the photos and updated reading of this cemetery (summer 2004) by family researcher Veva Scott.

In and email to WVCPA from family researcher Mary Naomi (Allison) Carpenter:
"A cousin emailed me your web site of the Greer Cemetery , which are almost all our relatives.  Thank you so much for the time you took cataloging it.
You mentioned the outhouse.  My uncle, Fred Daugherty, was the caretaker until his death.  The outhouse was his idea, since it would be difficult to find a restroom nearby if you were at the cemetery for any reason.  My cousin, John Daugherty (son of Fred) is now the caretaker.  I believe there is a cemetery board that reviews requests to be buried there... I have done extensive research on my family tree and really enjoy learning more about it."

Giles Family Graves:
Located on the upper side of the Greer Cemetery are at least 11 graves (as identified in the 1973 reading of this cemetery) belonging primarily to the Giles Family, a local African American family in the late 1800's/early 1900's.  Those identified in the 1973 reading by Violette Machir are listed above.  Additional notes from an email from family researcher Bill Daugherty regarding the note in Mason Co., W.Va. Cemetery Inscriptions for this cemetery: "As long as I can remember the Giles Graves have been “inside” the fence.  There is a large area at the upper side of the cemetery set aside where new graves are not dug because no one knows exactly where the Giles Graves are located."
